Hair Care Alert - Heads Against Dandruff!

Dandruff...what a bore! Dandruff is one of lifes ways of messing up your hair, and often messing up your day in the process. Dandruff is a nightmare, dandruff is irritating, dandruff is so insignificant in the big scheme of things that it becomes even more annoying when it does affect you. Dandruff is something we dislike and we think it is about time we took a stand. So let's launch the heads against dandruff club!!!

Well, this is where the Heads Against Dandruff Club begins. We are going to take over the net, we are going to get all over blogs, onto website and onto Facebook and Twitter like a flakey white batch of dandruff on your head! But fear not, we are here to help, we are going to find the best cure for dandruff, we are going to use a little science, a few case studies and lots of hair products to make dandruff a thing of the past. So, I guess there is just one more thing to ask...are you with me?!!

What is Dandruff?

So, before we wage war against dandruff, we are going have to know what we are up against. Dandruff is essentially dry skin, but of-course, there is a lot more to it than that. Dandruff isn't just called dandruff, oh no, it also has a really long and pretentious medical name as well: Pityriasis simplex capillitii, we aren't going to worry about that though, it took long enough to type correctly the first time.

The dandruff page on Wikipedia says that dandruff is "the shedding of dead skin cells from the scalp (not to be confused with a dry scalp)." Yes, like she said, don't cnfuse it with dry skin...silly.

It is a completely common for your skin to dry and 'flake' off, dandruff just abuses this normal right. Dandruff can be caused by a number of different things, and in true journalistic fashion, I have done some research and found a fantastic list of causes which I am now going to reference for you now...with full credit to the Hair Care Guide of course, thanks guys!

Causes of Dandruff:

Hormone imbalance
Excessive perspiration
Allergic reactions
Excessive stress
Poor hygene
Poor nutritioin/health
Lack of sleep
Inherited genetic trait
Inadequete shampooing and rinsing of the hair
Tight fitting hats
Excessive use of hair styling products (gel, mouse, hair dye, hair curler...)
Cold weather
Dry enviroment
Excessive Heat

Wow, looks like we have a job on our hands, in-fact, there is almost less stuff that doesn't cause dandruff. So, what has this research taught us? Well, we are up against a tricky customer. Dandruff has a heavy arsenal of weapons against your perfect hair and so you are going to have to be prepared. So, let's select our first weapons to fend off dandruff whilst we decide on our next move...and remember, don't flake out, we are all in this together (ahem, excuse the 'flake out' pun there).

Anti-Dandruff Shampoo and Conditioner

Ok, so we are looking for a quick fix to dandruff. We will need two simple tools, a bottle of shampoo and a bottle of conditioner. Both will have to be optimised for fighting dandruff and both will have to used carefully to ensure the best results. These will be our quick fix shampoo and conditioner products for dandruff whilst we work on a long term strategy to give dandruff a kick up the bum!

  • The Anti Dandruff Shampoo - There are lots of anti dandruff shampoo proucts out there, so finding one wasn't too much of a problem, what we wanted to do though was find a really good one, one that will do the job properly. So with a little hunting around we found one that is going to give dandruff a shake up (and it doesn't have Head and Shoulders in the name, come on, there are more types of shampoo out there than that!).

We chose to go with Simply Zen Dandruff Controller Shampoo. This anti dandruff shampoo is amazing, it is top top quality, it smells really nice and most importantly, it works! From the science side of things, this shampoo includes "anti-bacterial properties of zinc pyrithione which soothes the irritation and itching whilst botanical extract allantoin help restructure proteins." If I translate this back into English, this basically means that Simply Zen anti dandruff shampoo is good for your scalp and it will help to get rid of dandruff. So, squirt a bit of that on and come back to me when you are ready to condition your hair.

  • Anti Dandruff Conditioner - The conditioner for the job was a little more of a hunt. Whilst shampoos are ten a penny, finding a real good quality conditioner is very important. As I have said time and time again, if you are going to spend the money on your hair, spend it on conditioner, you really can't go wrong. So with all of that out of the way, let's see which conditioner to use.

We have gone for a more un-conventional conditioner for our war on dandruff. As opposed to a normal conditioner, Milkshake Conditioning Whipped Cream is made of a magical formula that is wonderful to use. This anti dandruff conditioner is aimed at caring for dry and damaged hair, but take my advice, it is gentle and it works absolute wonders on dandruff and dry scalps. Because it is made using natural milk proteins, it is as gentle as a conditioner comes. It will work magic on your scalp and keep the flakes at bay, use it and smile!

So, the war is on! We have won the first battle but there will be more to come. The war will be long and scalp dust will fly, but in the end we will be victorious. So, go forth and tell your flakey friends of the revolution, Hair Care 1 - Dandruff 0!

Summer Hair Care Tips - Summer Shampoo

Ah, there we go...it is Summer, at last! Yes, we have been waiting a whole year for Summer and right on cue here it is. The birds are chirping, the waves are lapping and I'm sitting in the office with my hair sticking to my face and a fan blowing warm air in my direction, don't you just love it.

Well, actually I do. Summer is a great time of year, the best infact. When your not slaving away behind a computer, or whatever else you do, Summer is a fantastic time of year. There are holidays to enjoy, pools and the sea to swim in, tans to get and general relaxing to be done. But with all of this good life, must come a negative. That negative is what the Summer can do to your hair.

To put it lightly, Summer hair care can be a night-mare of epic proportions, infact it can be so bad that you spend your days wishing for the cold nights of Winter, and that is never a good thing!

Well, fear not, because in this series of handy, helpful hair care tips we will be blogging about what the Summer does to your hair and how you can counteract the negatives to keep your locks looking as bright and breezy as the weather itself, so without further ado, I introduce the 2010 Summer hair care tips!

Summer Shampoo

So, in this week's Summer hair care tip blog I am going to be looking at the foundation of any hair care routine; that is summer shampoo of course!

So, before we pick some Summer shampoo for you to use, we need to clarify exactly what the Summer season does to your hair so that we can determine the best ways to make sure that your hair doesn't get damaged.

To put it simply, as lovely as the sun is, it can be a bit cruel to your hair. The harsh Summer rays can be damaging on the hair's cuticle. This can result in your hair losing its necessary oils and moisture that keep it healthy and can result in dry and damaged hair. Another side-effect of too much sun on your hair is the most hated of hair hells...frizz! Yes, you heard me right, the sun can turn your hair into a humid frizzy mess.

The other major issue when it comes to Summer is swimming. Swimming is great, but it is important to remember what chlorine can do to your hair. If you have coloured hair then chlorine is probably your worst enemy. Chlorine can discolour hair as well as leaving it prone to breakage.

So now we know what the Summer sun can do to your hair it is time we looked into what Summer shampoo you should be using to keep your hair healthy and beautiful!

Summer Shampoo 1 - Macadamia Moisturising Repair Shampoo

Macadamia Natural Oil hair products are still a relatively new range of hair products. They are made using a natural oil, called Macadamia, as you may have guessed. Macadamia Oil is amazing stuff, and it is no wonder that they have gone all the way to the South Pacific to source it! The natural oil in this moisture repair shampoo ticks all of the right boxes to make it the perfect Summer shampoo. The number 1 plus of this Summer shampoo is that it uses natural oil that works in harmony with your hair's natural oils. It is essential in the Summer that your hair retains its natural oils, and this can mean over-washing is a big no-no but with Macadamia Natural Oil your hair will be cared for in a natural way and will stay looking and feeling healthy.

Summer Shampoo 2 - Milkshake Colour Maintainer Shampoo

So, with that in mind we needed a shampoo that is specially designed to care for coloured hair. Milkshake Colour Maintainer Shampoo is without a doubt one of the best shampoos for the job. It is made using natural ingredients and it is gentle to hair that has been coloured. Milkshake Colour Maintainer Shampoo will protect the colour of your hair and gently cleanse your hair to keep it clean, healthy and moisturised. For those of you with coloured hair, this is a must have Summer shampoo.

On Trend Hair Style - The Wet Look

So summer is here and all you want to do is enjoy the sunshine, so do we (becasue you don't know how long it is going to last!). So, with that in mind, we in the Specialist Hair office have decided it is worth finding out how some great summer hair ideas in order to make your hair look great without having to spend hours and hours doing it.

With a trawl around our favourite magazines, websites, and even having a chat amongst outselves, we came across this wonderful little article from Hello Magazine! So impressed, we were, by all of the wonderful advice from, Hello that we have decided to talk you through each step with a guide to the products that will work best for the wet look hairstyle.

The Wet Look Hair Style

So, summer is a time when you are in the sun, you are in and out of the sea/swimming pool and on the beach as much as possible. With all of this sun worshiping going on, your hair can be left looking a little lost for ideas. Well, that is why the wet look is so good for this time of year. Not only will your hair look great, but to maintain it is easier than you may think. This is also a versatile style that works equally as well on long hair and short hair styles.

Washing Your Hair

Normally the first thing we would do when going through a new hair care tip is tell you what to use to wash your hair. Well, as Hello Magazine rightly say, this is one of the only times where it is probably better not to wash your hair to achieve the desired effect.

Having said that, all hair has its limits, and so when you do wash, make sure you use something that is going to gently rinse away any build up but leave your hair in a good natural condition. A shampoo made using natural oils is easily the best option for the summer wet look hair style and so we would recommend you use Macadamia Hair Products; Rejuvenating Shampoo. The Rejuvenating Shampoo is made using natural Macadamia Oil, found in the South Pacific. The girls in our office (and some of the men!) have been converted to Macadamia shampoo ever since it arrived, and because it is natural it cleanses your hair gently, perfect for restoring your hair's natural beauty after a long day in the sun.

*Hair Care Tip* Just use a little of the Macadamia Natural Moisturising Shampoo every few days and you will be cleansing your hair, but leaving it ready for the wet look hair styling method.

Smoothing Time!

Hello Magazine say dampen your hair, so, if you haven't done so already, do that now! Now is the time to apply a smoothing gel to your hair. Now, don't worry, we aren't going to tell you to go and get one of those awful tubs of 'wet style gel' you find in the supermarkets, we wouldn't even dream of it!

Thankfully, there a much, much better products out there for achieving a beautiful smooth, wet hair style. When it comes to hair styling, there is one special range of hair products that we like to put in our 'best kept secrets' folder, as a wonderful range that only the salon experts know about.

That range of amazing hair styling products is called Urban Tribe Hair Products. Part of the Z:One concept range of hair products, and regular contributor to our hair care blogs, Urban Tribe have a wonderful array of hair styling products that not only smell beautiful, but work wonders!

For the wet look, we recommend you use Montibello HDs Wet effect Gel. Montibello Wet Effect is an amazing quality hair smoothing gel that will apply easily to your hair and won't make it feel sticky or dirty. Simply apply it from root to tip and then comb through your hair with a fine tooth comb, using your other hand to smooth and flatten the hair, you can use a few invisible clips to hold your hair down if you need to, and you can even apply a touch more gel to set your hair in place! The Wet effect Gel contains a UVA-UVB filter that offers protection from the damaging effect of the Sun's radiation whilst moisturising and strengthening the hair.

That's It!

Yes, I can't believe it either, possibly one of the most simple hair styling guides I have ever written. All you need to do is put some hair gel in! But wait, never underestimate the power of your hair products. The reason this hair style will look so great is because of the quality of the hair products that make it. The Montibello gel contains the ingredients to make your hair style shine, and the Macadamia shampoo will keep your hair healthy, even in the most harsh summer conditions! So, go on and have a go at this super easy hair style and please send us in some summer hair pictures, we would love to see how you get on! Why not subscribe to our newsletter, because it's great!

See you again next time hair lovers!

Professional Hair Care's Top 5 Golden Secrets!

Ok, so looking after your hair seems like fighting a losing battle? It is one bad hair day after another and you are lost for ideas on what to do next. Well, fear not, because help is at hand. We at Specialist Hair have had a meeting on our top 5 exclusive hair care tips and have decided to share them! There are a few basic rules when it comes to hair care, and these rules must be followed if you want to keep a beautiful head of hair. So, in a completely organised fashion I am going to put these secrets into a simple list of '5 golden rules' so that you know exactly where to start when looking after your hair. If you get these right, you are onto a winner!

Our Top 5 Exclusive Pro Hair Care Tips

  • Don't Overwash - Right, so to kick things off we are going to start with this age old tip. Now it might sound like a cliche, or it may seem counter-intuitive but ignore this hair care tip at your peril. It is a simple one, don't wash your hair more often than you need to. Ok, so that sounds vague, so let me put some method behind it.

As this rather handy hair care tip explains, there is no hard and fast rule for how many times a week you should wash your hair. Within your hair and on your scalp you will find your body's natural oils. When you use shampoo you are at risk of taking away these natural oils and thus causing your body to over compensate when it works the natural oil back into the hair. Too much of this and your hair will become greasy. The trick is to wash only dirt and daily grime build up from your hair, and as such it is advisable not to shampoo more than once every two/three days. It does, of course, depend on your type of hair but generally this golden rule is true across the board.

  • Use The Right Tools! - Hair care product makers spend lots and lots of time slaving over pots of shampoo and conditioner, developing the best concoctions with all types of hair in mind. With all of this expert development going on, there is no reason not to use a hair product that is targetted specifically at your type of hair. That's right, whether you have the most common type of normal hair, or you have completely unique locks, you can bet there is a hair product range just for you. So, stop wasting time with average products, invest a little care when purchasing your products and you will completely get what you pay for! Always wanting to give practical advice, we have decided to give you a little list of ideas depending on hair types to show you how to choose your products!

For Dry and Damaged Hair - Macadamia Hair Products for dry and damaged hair

For Coloured Hair - Milkshake Colour Maintainer Hair Products for coloured hair

For Frizzy Hair - Keratin Complex Hair Products for frizzy hair (now in the UK!!!)

You get the idea, have a shop around and spend your money wisely!

  • Trim - Yup, looking after your hair means giving it a trim from time to time. We suggest that every 6 (ish) weeks you pop into your local hair salon and get a trim. The reason behind this is to fight split ends. Split ends are one of the top reasons for making hair look tired and dry, so what better way to stop them spoiling your style than just cutting them out? At the same time, take caution not to over cut your hair as this will start to have a negative effect on your hair. Just give your hair a trim from time to time, a simple yet sweet golden secret!

  • Colour With Care - Hair colour is obviously important, but there are two things to keep in mind. One is that you cannot underestimate the power of a professional hair colour expert. Not only will the expert be able to colour your hair without making a mess of things, but they will also be able to take care of colour care rule two: choose your hair colour carefully. There are some colours that you just won't suit, and others that you definately will, get some professional advice and have a good ol' think about it before you colour your hair.

  • Hot Hot Hot! - Heat styling tool are everywhere we look now. You can't move for hair straightening irons these days, and that is ok, as long as you use the tools carefully. Make your hair look and feel great by using a proper heat styling hair product that will work wonders for your hair. Just spray a decent product on to your hair before styling and you will ensure that your hair wont be damaged by the heat and it will also make your hair look and feel amazing, it is a simple step that is definately worth taking!

So, that concludes our Top 5 hair care golden secrets, follow these and your hair will look and feel amazing all of the time! Be sure to spread the word because after all sharing is caring :-)

The Latest Hair Care Trend Hitting The UK!!!

Pssst...Listen up, we have an exclusive for you! That's right, we have finally got our hands on something we have been excited about for a very long time. As usual, those in the USA seem to get all of the best things first, but now we can have a go. Do you go to bed and dream of having perfectly straight and smooth locks without any fuss? Well, finally our prayers have been answered and we think that all of the rave that has been following this new product around is completely justified. So, without further ado, let me introduce you to Keratin Complex Smoothing Therapy!

Keratin Complex Smoothing Therapy

So, first things first, what is Keratin Complex Smoothing Therapy? Put simply, it is an amazing salon treatment that will utterly transform your hair and take it from curly and frizzy to straight and smooth, and the results don't just last a day or two after a visit to the salon, nope, they last for months! Literally months!

Now, the first thing you should know about the Keratin Complex Smoothing Therapy is that there has been lots of talk about in different places. Cosmopolitan have featured it, blogs have followed it and others have just been discussing it! The common thing between all of this hype though is that Keratin Smoothing Therapy is amazing!

So, we know that we are not just dealing with your normal hair product here, this is something special. I like to think of Keratin Complex as the IPad of the hair care world! That's right, I am that excited about getting hold of it and seeing how it works, and most importantly seeing if it is really as amazing as all those blogs have been saying.

A Bit of History

I think it is worth looking at a bit of the histroy of the Keratin Complex Smoothing Therapy before we dive in. It is developed by Coppola who are based in the USA. Keratin Complex Smoothing Therapy was launched in 2007 and as the official Facebook page tells us is now considered the "leading smoothing treatment in the world", this is certainly quite a claim!

Started by renowned hair stylist Peter Coppola, Keratin Complex hair products range consists of the full range of different products from shampoo and conditioners to styling products and styling tools. What we are interested in though, is the world famous smoothing therapy.

The smoothing therapy itself has gone from strength to strength since its launch and as it hits the UK shores it has recently been graced with some impressive accolades. In March, Keratin Complex won 3 awards in the prestigious Behindthechair.com's awards, including the 'best smoothing system'. Impressive stuff indeed, so, enough of the history of it all, let's take a look at the actual product!!!

Keratin Complex Smoothing Therapy

Like all of the Keratin Complex hair product range, and as I am sure you can gleen from the name, Keratin Complex Smoothing Therapy uses Keratin as its main ingredient. The Smoothin Therapy is quite importantly for professional use only, so you wont be able to buy a bottle and use it in the shower, it will end in tears believe me!

Now, one of my personal pet hates, and I know everyone else's in the office as well is frizz. Oh frizz how you blight the lives of women around the world, ruining nights out and days at work, you are the the main ingredient to a bad hair day. Well, take a quick look at the Keratin website and you will see the claim that the Smoothing Therapy will "eliminate up to 95% of frizz"! Wow, that is a lot of frizz, or not if the case may be!

Now, I am not really one for all of the science stuff, so I won't bore you with all of that, but basically the Keratin Complex Smoothing Treatment penetrates into the core of your hair, adding natural Keratin and other ingredients that will straighten your hair and make it frizz free. The other amazing thing is that it is gentle and so can be used on any type of hair quite safely. Another thing, and a thing I didn't know before is that is can be used on hair that has only just been coloured! Amazing.

The Demonstration

So, with a grip frimly on the bottles of Keratin Complex Smoothing Treatment we invited around some of our best salon freinds to the office, packed it full of people and proceeded with a demonstration of this new (to the UK) hair smoothing treatment to really put it to the test.

Now, I am quite enthusiastic, so you probably are not surprised that I am in love with this product, however some of the people at our salon expose are quite serious people. Well, let me tell you, they went crazy for it, not only did they demand they have some for themselves, but they simply couldn't believe the difference to our model's hair. We held the demo last week, and still this week we are getting calls from people saying that they have just seen the model's hair and can't believe how different she looks!

Now, we don't yet have a video of the demo, but are holding more so will get onto that, but I have trawled Youtube to find something to show you and here it is:

Now, the other great thing is that you can now buy the Keratin Complex Hair Products range of shampoos, conditioners and styling products online in the UK from an official Supplier. So, take a look at all of the info and give it a go, you won't be dissapointed!

Specialist Secrets to Youthful Looking Hair!

Everyone wants to look younger these days, nobody wants to look their age and there are lots of people claiming that they have the next 'quick fix' for all of your beauty problems. Well, not to be outdone, we have decided to compile a comprehensive guide to keeping those youthful looks without having to go to extreme lengths, and we will try and do it on the cheap as well! So, here is my jargon free youthful hair guide...

Photo: Nancy Frost

  • Hair Length

You can see it now, the temptation these days is that the minute you get over a certain age (40ish) you decide that you are not allowed to wear long, beautiful locks. So, rather than keep your long hair you chop it all off in something of an offering to hair gods in the hope that they will grace you with at least some hair on your head for the remainder of your days on this green earth.

Well, I've got news for you. Hair life doesn't stop at 40 and there are no rules to dealing with your hair at any age. We thing that you should consider your hair length to fit in with a number of things, but not age. We think the length of your hair should be decided on things, like your general style and the shape of your face and other intangible things like that.

Now I know that this is a very 'airy-fairy' tip but the real wisdom hidden in these words is that you should go and see a trusted hair stylist and they will know exactly what length hair would suit you, listen to them and not the voice in your head saying "cut it off, cut it all off!".

  • Healthy Hair is Healthy Hair!

A classic journey that many women take everyday is that of the 'road to healthy hair', you can throw as many products and styling irons and hair dryers as you like at your head but at the end of the day there is only one way to look at things; healthy hair is healthy hair, you can't fake it!

So, with that in mind, I would like to encourage you, my loyal reader, to take a common sense approach to your hair care routine. As I always say, think of the hair care routine in three stages: wash, condition and style. So, with three simple steps in there you can set out with a clear head and find the best way to get healthy hair.

So, you will need a shampoo. The shampoo you use should be selected specifically to suit the style and type of your hair. Here are some options to get you started: curly hair, straight hair, coloured hair, dry and damaged hair. You get the picture. Basically, you need to choose just for you the shampoo that will suit you best, by all means send me a message and a pic and I will give you a personal advice session!

So, once you have the shampoo use it as advised on the bottle. There is no need to use too much and there is also no need to under do it either. Just a nice simple aproach will work wonders on stressed out hair and the more relaxed you are about the process the more cared for your hair will look! Be gentle!

The same goes for conditioners and styling products. I can't really advise everybody what products to use here because it very much depends on your personal needs, but if I was to give you an amazing tip (and best kept secret) I would advise you browse Milkshake Hair Products.

More tips will be coming next week when we scale things down into specific hair types so that you have a specific rescource for your own situation. I would love to see some pics and hear some requests from you guys to get me started so by all means send them in to contactus@milkshakehairproducts.co.uk and I will be sure to include your message!
