How to Boost Your Roots

If you have fine and lifeless hair, follow these simple steps to help boost your roots and give your hair more volume!

Some are blessed with naturally thick and full bodied hair but for those of us who aren't, all is not lost. It's easier than you think to give your hair a thicker look...

Washing Your Hair

  1. Don't wash your hair too often! Shampooing too often upsets hair and over time it will lose its natural bounce.
  2. On days when you do wash your hair, use a good shampoo and conditioner which will not weigh down your hair and will actually give your hair extra body. Keratin Complex Care Shampoo the perfect shampoo for chemically treated hair that needs extra care to restore its natural beauty. Care shampoo is a professional shampoo which will add body and volume to your hair whilst giving it a deep, but gentle cleanse! A perfect conditioner to help boost your roots is: Milkshake Volume Solution Conditioner. This conditioner is formulated to restore strength and vitality whilst thicken your hair from root to tip and will leave your hair beautifully bouncy and healthy looking.
  3. Try to avoid washing your hair on the day of styling as hair tends to hold volume and style better when it is not freshly washed.

Tips for Styling Your Hair

  1. When blow drying hair, flip your head upside down to add volume and massage your scalp whilst drying to give lift to those roots.
  2. Use a large vent or round brush when blow drying to boost the volume.
  3. Gently ruffle hair with your hands after blow drying to give it some life again.
  4. If your hair is still flat, scrunch hair with a thickening mousse. Try Montibello Densi Volume Treatment Mousse. This mousse will boost every strand of hair and will add amazing volume which will stay with you all day!
  5. To seal this style, blow dry on a cool setting.

Bonus Hair Boosting Product

Milkshake Lifestyling Hair Styling Potion. This could be the answer to your prayers. Say goodbye to fine and lifeless hair! Whatever condition your hair is in, use this secret potion to add a brilliant boost to your hair. This product leaves hair natural and healthy whilst adding priceless volume!

Hair Care Alert - Heads Against Dandruff!

Dandruff...what a bore! Dandruff is one of lifes ways of messing up your hair, and often messing up your day in the process. Dandruff is a nightmare, dandruff is irritating, dandruff is so insignificant in the big scheme of things that it becomes even more annoying when it does affect you. Dandruff is something we dislike and we think it is about time we took a stand. So let's launch the heads against dandruff club!!!

Well, this is where the Heads Against Dandruff Club begins. We are going to take over the net, we are going to get all over blogs, onto website and onto Facebook and Twitter like a flakey white batch of dandruff on your head! But fear not, we are here to help, we are going to find the best cure for dandruff, we are going to use a little science, a few case studies and lots of hair products to make dandruff a thing of the past. So, I guess there is just one more thing to ask...are you with me?!!

What is Dandruff?

So, before we wage war against dandruff, we are going have to know what we are up against. Dandruff is essentially dry skin, but of-course, there is a lot more to it than that. Dandruff isn't just called dandruff, oh no, it also has a really long and pretentious medical name as well: Pityriasis simplex capillitii, we aren't going to worry about that though, it took long enough to type correctly the first time.

The dandruff page on Wikipedia says that dandruff is "the shedding of dead skin cells from the scalp (not to be confused with a dry scalp)." Yes, like she said, don't cnfuse it with dry skin...silly.

It is a completely common for your skin to dry and 'flake' off, dandruff just abuses this normal right. Dandruff can be caused by a number of different things, and in true journalistic fashion, I have done some research and found a fantastic list of causes which I am now going to reference for you now...with full credit to the Hair Care Guide of course, thanks guys!

Causes of Dandruff:

Hormone imbalance
Excessive perspiration
Allergic reactions
Excessive stress
Poor hygene
Poor nutritioin/health
Lack of sleep
Inherited genetic trait
Inadequete shampooing and rinsing of the hair
Tight fitting hats
Excessive use of hair styling products (gel, mouse, hair dye, hair curler...)
Cold weather
Dry enviroment
Excessive Heat

Wow, looks like we have a job on our hands, in-fact, there is almost less stuff that doesn't cause dandruff. So, what has this research taught us? Well, we are up against a tricky customer. Dandruff has a heavy arsenal of weapons against your perfect hair and so you are going to have to be prepared. So, let's select our first weapons to fend off dandruff whilst we decide on our next move...and remember, don't flake out, we are all in this together (ahem, excuse the 'flake out' pun there).

Anti-Dandruff Shampoo and Conditioner

Ok, so we are looking for a quick fix to dandruff. We will need two simple tools, a bottle of shampoo and a bottle of conditioner. Both will have to be optimised for fighting dandruff and both will have to used carefully to ensure the best results. These will be our quick fix shampoo and conditioner products for dandruff whilst we work on a long term strategy to give dandruff a kick up the bum!

  • The Anti Dandruff Shampoo - There are lots of anti dandruff shampoo proucts out there, so finding one wasn't too much of a problem, what we wanted to do though was find a really good one, one that will do the job properly. So with a little hunting around we found one that is going to give dandruff a shake up (and it doesn't have Head and Shoulders in the name, come on, there are more types of shampoo out there than that!).

We chose to go with Simply Zen Dandruff Controller Shampoo. This anti dandruff shampoo is amazing, it is top top quality, it smells really nice and most importantly, it works! From the science side of things, this shampoo includes "anti-bacterial properties of zinc pyrithione which soothes the irritation and itching whilst botanical extract allantoin help restructure proteins." If I translate this back into English, this basically means that Simply Zen anti dandruff shampoo is good for your scalp and it will help to get rid of dandruff. So, squirt a bit of that on and come back to me when you are ready to condition your hair.

  • Anti Dandruff Conditioner - The conditioner for the job was a little more of a hunt. Whilst shampoos are ten a penny, finding a real good quality conditioner is very important. As I have said time and time again, if you are going to spend the money on your hair, spend it on conditioner, you really can't go wrong. So with all of that out of the way, let's see which conditioner to use.

We have gone for a more un-conventional conditioner for our war on dandruff. As opposed to a normal conditioner, Milkshake Conditioning Whipped Cream is made of a magical formula that is wonderful to use. This anti dandruff conditioner is aimed at caring for dry and damaged hair, but take my advice, it is gentle and it works absolute wonders on dandruff and dry scalps. Because it is made using natural milk proteins, it is as gentle as a conditioner comes. It will work magic on your scalp and keep the flakes at bay, use it and smile!

So, the war is on! We have won the first battle but there will be more to come. The war will be long and scalp dust will fly, but in the end we will be victorious. So, go forth and tell your flakey friends of the revolution, Hair Care 1 - Dandruff 0!

Specialist Secrets to Youthful Looking Hair!

Everyone wants to look younger these days, nobody wants to look their age and there are lots of people claiming that they have the next 'quick fix' for all of your beauty problems. Well, not to be outdone, we have decided to compile a comprehensive guide to keeping those youthful looks without having to go to extreme lengths, and we will try and do it on the cheap as well! So, here is my jargon free youthful hair guide...

Photo: Nancy Frost

  • Hair Length

You can see it now, the temptation these days is that the minute you get over a certain age (40ish) you decide that you are not allowed to wear long, beautiful locks. So, rather than keep your long hair you chop it all off in something of an offering to hair gods in the hope that they will grace you with at least some hair on your head for the remainder of your days on this green earth.

Well, I've got news for you. Hair life doesn't stop at 40 and there are no rules to dealing with your hair at any age. We thing that you should consider your hair length to fit in with a number of things, but not age. We think the length of your hair should be decided on things, like your general style and the shape of your face and other intangible things like that.

Now I know that this is a very 'airy-fairy' tip but the real wisdom hidden in these words is that you should go and see a trusted hair stylist and they will know exactly what length hair would suit you, listen to them and not the voice in your head saying "cut it off, cut it all off!".

  • Healthy Hair is Healthy Hair!

A classic journey that many women take everyday is that of the 'road to healthy hair', you can throw as many products and styling irons and hair dryers as you like at your head but at the end of the day there is only one way to look at things; healthy hair is healthy hair, you can't fake it!

So, with that in mind, I would like to encourage you, my loyal reader, to take a common sense approach to your hair care routine. As I always say, think of the hair care routine in three stages: wash, condition and style. So, with three simple steps in there you can set out with a clear head and find the best way to get healthy hair.

So, you will need a shampoo. The shampoo you use should be selected specifically to suit the style and type of your hair. Here are some options to get you started: curly hair, straight hair, coloured hair, dry and damaged hair. You get the picture. Basically, you need to choose just for you the shampoo that will suit you best, by all means send me a message and a pic and I will give you a personal advice session!

So, once you have the shampoo use it as advised on the bottle. There is no need to use too much and there is also no need to under do it either. Just a nice simple aproach will work wonders on stressed out hair and the more relaxed you are about the process the more cared for your hair will look! Be gentle!

The same goes for conditioners and styling products. I can't really advise everybody what products to use here because it very much depends on your personal needs, but if I was to give you an amazing tip (and best kept secret) I would advise you browse Milkshake Hair Products.

More tips will be coming next week when we scale things down into specific hair types so that you have a specific rescource for your own situation. I would love to see some pics and hear some requests from you guys to get me started so by all means send them in to contactus@milkshakehairproducts.co.uk and I will be sure to include your message!

How to Get Hair Like Eva Longoria-Parker (Desperate Housewives)!

How To Get Hair Like Eva Longoria Parker

She might be a desperate housewive, but she isn't desperate for beautiful hair. Eva Longoria-Parker has permenantly perfect hair and we are desperate to find out the secrets behind her great look. So, with Desperate Houswives in full flow at the moment (ooh it's getting good!) we are going to crack open the secrets behind this desperately good hair!

Eva Longoria Parker has beautiful thick, dark and naturally wavy hair. She manages to keep it looking full bodied and her wavy locks look healthy with a beautiful shine and a natural vitality and tone.

  • The Shampoo Stage

The first thing we need to do is to use an excellent shampoo that will not only cleanse the hair, but add some real body and volume to the hair. There is another key ingredient to this shampoo that we require as well...luxury. Any desperate houswife worth their salt should count the actual experience of using a hair product as important as the end result, and so we have thought up an excellent, luxury shampoo that is not only a joy to use, but will take care of your hair salon style!

The luxury shampoo we have chosen to use is Milkshake Volume Solution Shampoo. Milkshake is an excellent range of salon shampoo and hair care products. They are designed to be used by professional hair stylists in salons and so, as you can imagine, are excellent quality, if they weren't then there would be lots of salon stylists moaining! Milkshake Volume Solution Shampoo does what it says on the bottle, it adds volume to your hair. Give your hair real body that will turn heads and leave your hair looking and feeling healthy and amazing! The consistency and aroma of this shampoo is wonderful and you will be bathing your hair in the kind of luxury suitable for any housewife, desperate or not!

  • Positive Conditioning!

Ok, here I go again...conditioning hair is a bit of a speciality for me. As I have said in previous weeks, and I am sure the regular readers amongst you will be sick of hearing this, if you spend money in only one place, spend it on your conditioner. Having worked in the hair care and beauty industry for some time, I have learned that the best and most easy way to ensure that you have beautiful hair is to condition it with a good quality product. If you are looking to make cuts somewhere, make it on the shampoo, but don't sacrifice the conditioner! With that nugget of advice out of the way, we are looking to emulate the beautiful hair of Eva Longoria-Parker (of Desperate Housewives fame!). We have added some excellent volume using your luxury Milkshake shampoo, now we need to make the most of this volume and add some shine to it as well as promoting the hair's volume.

The conditioner we have chosen to get the Eva Longoria-Parker look is again from the fantastic Milkshake range. If you haven't heard of Milkshake yet, then where have you been!? Just in case you didn't know then Milkshake are a fantastic range of hair products, that originated from Z.One concepts in Italy. Normally we would spend a little more time raving about Milkshake but we will save that for an article of its own, for now we are only interested in a good quality volumising conditioner for hair.

The Milkshake conditioner we have chosen to use is the Volume Solution Conditioner, the perfect partner for the Milkshake Volume Solution Shampoo, it uses active volumizing ingredients that work with the keratin in your hair to give it a natural boost and leave it feeling silky smooth. As well as this, it is another luxury hair product that will suit you Desperate Housewives out there! We found that using just a modest amount of the Volume Solution Conditioner had some fantastic results. Just work it through your hair after using the partner shampoo and your hair will not only be left volumised but it will have a beautiful, natural shine.

  • Style and Class!
We have decided that we want to make this 'hair tutorial' as simple as possible and so we have tried to keep it to three helpful, bitesize stages. As such, we are looking for a hair styler that will take care of the remainder of the task in hand; namely, to get hair just like Desperate Housewife, Eva Longoria-Parker. The hair styler we are looking for needs to make the most of your hair's volume as well allowing your to hold those loose curls and waves in place without allowing frizz to spoil the fun.

It is worth adding here that if you don't have naturally wavey hair (I don't) then you will want to perhaps style it using a curling iron. Now, this is important, make sure you use a styling treatment before using a styling iron, otherwise you will damage your hair. I tend to use Simply Zen Cuticle Redefiner before I style with irons, it protects my hair from damage and promotes the style I am going for! Make sure you only gently cure your hair, we only want loose curls and waves here after-all!

With that taken care of, I have decided the best thing for the job will be to use a nice hair spray to finish things off. I have chosen to use Milkshake Lifestyling Open Air Hair Spray. This is a hair spray made by Milkshake who are specialists in natural hair care. The fact that this is a Milkshake hair product means that it uses the best ingredients and cares for all hair types.

To use the hair spray, be gentle with it and spray sparingly until you feel you have achieved the Eva Longoria-Parker look. The Milkshake hair spray will then do all of the hard work to keep your hair beautiful and in place.

So, there you have, now we can all be Desperate Housewives. If you have any questions of need any help feel free to send us a message and we will get our experts to take a look! How To Get Hair Like...Blake Lively (Gossip Girl)

Ever watched Gossip Girl and thought to yourself..."how do they get their hair to look so good all of the time?". Us too! But fret not, they might have a professional team working on them all of the time they are on set but we are here to take your hand and be your own personal hair care expert! So, Blake Lively, with your luscious locks of wavy blonde hair, we are going to crack the secrets behind your look!

  • Step 1: Get it Clean!

Wavy hair is all about body, and so it is imperritive that you add body to your hair at the earliest stage of styling. To set your hair so that is ready for a light and weightless wavy look you will need to use a suitable shampoo that will add a good amount of moisture withough weighing your hair down. Hair will also need to be strong and protected so that you have no split ends that will ruin the wavy look that Blake Lively's character, Serena van der Woodsen achieves.

For the shampoo stage of this style we have chosen to use a professional shampoo that is made specially to help you obtain perfect, gentle waves. We have chosen to use Montibello Densi Volume shampoo (see end of article for links to products!). Densi Volume Shampoo is used by our friends who work in salons and they swear by it. If you have been following our blog you will know that we are big fans of Montibello Hair Products and Densi volume is a shampoo that is specifically designed to give your hair weightless body. Montibello will leave your hair moisturised and protected as well as light and a breeze to style, the perfect condition to work the best waves!

  • Step 2: Condition, condition, condition

Ok, ok, this is becoming a bit of an obsession for me, but if there is one thing you should do propely it is to condition your hair with a high quality and suitable conditioner. As I have said in previous articles, it is usually worth while spending more time and money on a good conditioner than a shampoo, and this is still true when you are trying to get light waves.

Your conditioner will need to be a light conditioner that won't add too much moisture to your hair but rather add a protective element to your hair to eliminate the risk of frizz; remember, frizz is your number one enemy when you want to get wavy hair. We have decided to use Milkshake Conditioning Whipped Cream. There are two reasons for this choice, one, we love the natural ingredients that make this conditioner, two, it is a beautiful, lightweight conditioner that will protect your hair from split ends and frizz.

Work the conditioner through your hair and allow it to work its magic for a minute or two. Make sure that you wash the conditioner out of your hair thoroughly before moving onto the next stage. We are getting closer to getting hair like Serena from Gossip Girl!

  • Step 3: Dry Gently

Next you have to dry your hair, but STOP! Don't just get the hair dryer on it and go mad until your hair is a steaming mess that is the same temperature as the sun. The temptation is to often use tools like a blow dryer too much, but be careful, using this too much can undo all of your hard work before now.

Before you pick up the hairdryer there are a couple of careful steps you need to take. The first is to add a good quality volumising spray to the roots of your hair. We have chosen to use Milkshake Open Air Hairspray. Another Milkshake product, and again we have chosen it becuase it is quite light and gentle. Apply the spray directly to your roots, you don't need to use too much but enough to add the required lift from the root.

Next you need to apply a mousse to your locks. We have chosen to use Montibello Densi volume treatment mousse. The treatment mousse is part of the Montibello TREAT range and it is great for adding a lift and full bodied volume. Apply the mousse by gently working through the length of your hair, you don't need to add it to your roots!

Now you have a volumising spray on the roots and a full bodied mousse on your hair you can gently blow dry using a mixed bristle paddle brush to add volume whilst you dry.

  • Step 4: Styling

The next stage to achive the Gossip Girl hair look is to using the curling irons. We find it easiest to separate your hair into three sections so that the hair you aren't styling at the time is kept out of the way. The trick to achieving loose curls is to wrap about 1 or 2 inches of hair around the barrell of the curling iron. You can alternate the direction of the curl as you work from the root to the tip.

  • Step 5: Finish Your Blake Lively Look!

Finally, once you have curled all three sections of your hair, add a small amount of hair finishing cream to stop any frizz in its tracks! We use Macadamia's Curl Reviving Cream, which provides hold and amazing form to curls or waves without leaving any oily residue. Only use a small amount and gently work it through your hair to finish off your style.

Now you have weightless curls that wouldn't look out of place on the set of Gossip Girl! Below are a few links to all of the products we used in this hair tips article and if you have anything to add please leave us a comment,we'd love to hear from you, oh...and we do requests! Also while you're here I'd like to ask you to subscribe to our newsletter because it's great! and it's written by me!!

Not only does she possess an amazing voice but she consistently maintains an air of grace a she always looks beautiful. Now, we know that Beyonce probably has a dedicated team of beauty and hair experts following her wherever she goes, but we think we could pass on some tips to help to achieve the 'Beyonce look'.

Inspired by a small artice on how to get the straight hair look we wanted to add some more to it!

Straight Sleek Hair Like Beyonce

  • First of all, you need to brush your hair straight whilst you dry it. We would suggest you use a good hair brush that will work with your style while you do this. Macadamia hair brushes are ideal for this, designed for salon styling they are perfect for the job.

  • Next you need to straighten your hair, but here comes a top hair care tip...never straighten your hair without protecting it first. It is ultra important that you don't damage your hair. The single most common cause of frizzy and unkempt hair is damaged ends, caused 9 times out of 10 by heat styling without protecting your hair. We suggest you protect your hair by using a good quality thermal hair treatment. We would advise using Milkshake No Frizz Glistening Milk. Not only is it designed to tackle the cause of frizz and protect your hair, but it is also made using natural ingredients, so it is completely friendly to your hair.

  • To finish off your sleek Beyonce hair, you need to add some beautiful shine. Shine will make your hair look and feel healthy, as well as dazzling everyone with how sleek your new look is. In our eyes, there really is only one product for the job: No inhibition 12 Wonders. Top 10 Industry Secrets for Fighting Frizz

We hate unwanted frizz, the main ingredient of a bad hair day...so without further ado, here are our top 10 tips to avoid unwanted frizzy hair!

1. Use a good moisturising conditioner. This is the best thing you can do after shampooing because it adds moisture to your hair as well as having ingredients that promote smoothness. It is always a good investment to have a good conditioner. Our top tip is , it is a good investment for healthy hair and no frizz!

2. Get your hair cut regularly! Cutting your hair on a regualr basis need not be a painful or expensive task. As long as you stay on top of it, having a regular hair cut will get rid of split ends and remove damged hairs.

3. Don't wash your hair every day. I know this sounds silly, and surely clean hair is better, but it is a known little fact that washing your hair too much can strip your hair's natural vitality and make it become more greasy and unhealthy. Give your hair a good wash, using a high quality shampoo, every few days. We suggest Macadamia Moisturising Repair shampoo for an affordable, high quality shampoo.

4. Straightening irons will give you frizzy hair! Ok, maybe not straight away, but after a while of using heat styling irons, your hair will become badly damaged and will need repairing. That is not to say never use irons, just if you do, make sure you protect your hair with a thermal hair treatment before you use the irons.

5. Pretty much the same as the above...avoid blow drying your hair. Blow drying damages hair as well and will make your hair frizz. Just be careful how you treat your hair, it doesn't hurt to let it dry naturally every now and then!

6. Don't use too much hairspray when finishing your hair style. Too much is bad, just use a light mist and this will help you avoid unwanted frizz.

7. Use Milkshake No Frizz Glistening Serum. Ok, ok, this is a complete plug! But it is a great product designed specifically to target frizz and get rid of it!

8. Here is a more 'out there' method, but worth a go. Sleep on a satin pillow case, or wrap your hair in a silk bonnet when you sleep. Apparantly it will help your hair feel really nice and smooth!

9. Mousse products don't help! Using too much mousse can cause havoc for hair prone to frizz. Really if you have frizzy hair, mousse isn't the product for you, try using a spray because chances ae you have enough volume anyway.

10. Ok, this one is another obvious one, but get to know a stylist who knows your hair inside out. There is really no substitute for someone who spends a lot of time learning about your hair and then treating it how it wants to be treated. My hair stylist is my best freind!
